An initial motion to remove the word "lunches" from the travel/expense authorization and simultaneously add two organizations (Gulf Coast Builders Exchange and Suncoast Builders Exchange) failed on a voice tally (motion failed 4–2–1). That vote recorded a division and the chair declared the initial motion failed.
Board members then proposed a narrower change: replace the word "lunches" with the word "events" to make the policy consistent for listed organizations. That revision passed unanimously. Staff said the change will be applied across the travel/authorized expenses list for 2026.
Commissioners debated the underlying principle — whether taxpayer funds should be used for events at organizations that may endorse candidates — and several said they wanted clear, transparent language so the public would understand when county funds were being used to attend nonpartisan vs. potentially partisan gatherings.
