The Orange County School Board approved a recommendation to declare several district vehicles—including eight school buses—surplus and to pursue disposal options using the GovDeals online marketplace.

Transportation staff member Justin Sarver told the board the list reflects vehicles that have reached the district’s age and condition standards and that some units may remain in service while disposal options are evaluated. He said options include using vehicles as trade-in for replacements or selling through GovDeals to access a nationwide market.

Sarver said the district is actively recruiting bus drivers and highlighted training options for non-CDL 14-passenger buses to provide additional operational flexibility during athletics and other travel. "Our best source of new drivers are actually our parents," Sarver said, noting benefits and incentives for potential drivers.

The board moved to approve the surplus designation and disposal approach; the motion passed by voice vote. The action opens the procurement and disposal process but does not in itself award replacement contracts.

Next steps: Transportation staff will proceed with disposal planning via GovDeals and continue recruitment and training efforts for drivers; the board will receive updates as the district proceeds through disposition and replacement planning.
