Smithfield council appoints John Engler to fill midterm vacancy

Engler, who addressed the council earlier as a candidate and described more than two decades in Smithfield and work at Utah State University, was nominated by Councilmember Wade. The motion carried with councilmembers Wade, Sue, Jen and Todd voting yes.
Mayor and council administered the oath of office to Engler immediately after the vote. During the swearing‑in Engler recited the required oath to support and defend the United States and Utah constitutions and pledged to discharge the duties of office with fidelity.
Why it matters: The appointment fills a seat that runs through Dec. 31, 2027, and gives the council a full complement of members to continue work on planning, infrastructure and other city priorities.
What happened: Council opened item 6 by explaining the statutory process for filling a vacancy, the order of candidates and five‑minute interview limits. After hearing statements from 17 applicants emphasizing issues such as growth, water, sidewalks and public safety, Wade nominated Engler. The vote followed and Engler was sworn in at the meeting.
