Board approves $70,000 in community partner grants, prioritizing basic‑needs services

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved allocations totaling $70,000 to local nonprofit partners, prioritizing organizations that provide direct basic‑needs services.

Under a motion presented at the meeting, the board allocated $25,000 to Treetop (a child advocacy and forensic investigative entity), $35,000 to Stronger Futures (direct services including food and shelter), and $10,000 to the Conservation District, for a combined total of $70,000. The motion passed unanimously.

A commissioner explained the reasoning for prioritizing organizations that address Maslow‑level needs: food, shelter and safety — particularly given rising community need. Candace Bryant said staff will require invoices and set a future time (a placeholder in October) for recipient organizations to report on how prior county funds were used and the impact achieved.

Commissioners asked staff to improve outreach and fairness in the application process going forward (posting notice in local paper and on social media, and offering an opportunity for nonprofits to present in person). Staff said some reports from recipients were already received and that future payments will be made by invoice so the county can track use of funds.

The board discussed refining the process next year to coordinate some requests with the county’s economic development department where appropriate. The approved allocations will be paid from the county budgeted community partner line item for the coming year.
