Council introduces ordinance to lower posted speeds on several Ojai streets

The Ojai City Council introduced an ordinance Wednesday to implement speed reductions recommended in the citywide engineering and traffic survey. Staff said the changes are meant to improve pedestrian and driver safety and will be implemented by posting new speed signs after the ordinance takes effect.
Under the proposed ordinance (Ordinance 970), Country Club Drive, Foothill Road and Fairview would be reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph and Cuyama would be reduced from 25 mph to 20 mph. Staff said signs are ready and the ordinance, if adopted on second reading, would take effect about 30 days later.
During public comment, residents asked why Grand Avenue was not included; staff responded the speed survey data did not support a reduction on Grand except for a small segment at the city’s far east limit. Council members emphasized following the traffic engineer’s recommendations and noted an Assembly bill effective Jan. 1, 2026 allows reducing school‑zone speeds from 25 to 20 mph without an engineer’s study (with some equipment requirements) and staff will return with implementation details.
The council moved to introduce the ordinance by title, waived further reading and set a second reading two weeks later; the motion passed on roll call.
