VDOT reports maintenance, speed‑study results; board discusses visibility fixes at key intersection

Brian Locker, assistant resident engineer for the VDOT Farmville residency, updated the Buckingham County Board on routine maintenance—ditch work, shoulders, boom axing—and answered follow‑up questions from supervisors. Locker said a speed study of Cartersville Road found no warrant for reducing the 55 mph limit, noting only three accidents in the multi‑year lookback and that the road’s geometrics do not support a lower limit.

Locker reported daily traffic volumes for primary routes (Route 15 up to about 9,300 vehicles/day; Route 60 in the 2,000s) and secondary‑road counts such as Bell Road at about 1,700–1,900 vehicles/day, which staff described as the highest secondary road volume in the county.

Supervisors raised a separate safety concern about sun glare at the turn signal at the Route 60/15 intersection, with a school‑bus driver describing inability to see the turn arrow. Board members and VDOT staff discussed back plates or visors for traffic signals and chevron curve signage for approaching curves to improve visibility; Locker said the county and VDOT would look into potential fixes and use county safety funds for targeted milling and pavement work on Glenmore Road in spring.
