Middleburg staff flags well‑level drops and a 1.5M‑gallon production/collection gap; leak testing planned

At the Dec. 11 meeting, Middleburg utilities staff reported a notable difference between water production and wastewater treatment volumes and described new monitoring steps for an increasingly depressed well level.
Staff said water production in October was about 3.8 million gallons while wastewater treated was about 2.3 million gallons — a roughly 1.5 million gallon differential — and that the utility billed approximately 90% of the water produced. To investigate whether the gap reflects nonsewer uses or distribution leakage, staff will invite the Virginia Water Association to perform leak testing and acoustic surveys.
On monitoring, staff reported that Well 4’s transducer readings have recently dropped below prior thresholds (previous top threshold near 295 feet; new transducer placement near 483 feet above pump), producing dips the team had not seen earlier. Staff said they will continue to adjust pumping patterns (using Well 3 to relieve Well 4) and collect higher‑resolution data to determine whether the trend represents temporary fluctuation or a longer‑term groundwater concern. Delegate‑elect John McAuliffe had earlier urged a state‑level water‑table study for the region.
