Commissioners approve multiple settlements totaling $590,000-plus

Following an executive session on litigation and personnel, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners approved five settlement and release agreements during the Jan. 6 meeting and authorized the chief financial officer to amend the county budget where necessary.
Attorney Mister Reed read the settlements into the public record. The five settlements approved and the amounts announced were: Earth First Construction and Development, Inc. — $50,000; a settlement in the Timothy O’Neil & Victor Hill matter — $70,000; a wrongful-death–related settlement presented on behalf of Malika Wright (surviving parent of LaBrea Wright) — $405,000; Michael Neal et al. (auto-accident matter) — $40,000; and Kirk Traylor v. Trevion Johnson (auto-accident matter) — $25,000. Reed said the listed civil actions will be dismissed upon approval of the settlement agreements.
Board members voted to approve the settlements by voice vote. The board also authorized the county’s chief financial officer to adjust revenue and expense lines as needed to reflect the settlements.
What happens next: county staff will implement the budget amendments necessary to record these payments and the associated case dismissals will be filed in the relevant courts per the settlement terms recorded on Jan. 6.
