Commissioners deny one indigent cremation aid request, approve two

Shantel, a county staff member who presented the cases, said case 20260010 (an application to Manning Wheatley Wheatley Funeral Home) was recommended for denial under Idaho Code 31-3403 because "Bannock County does not appear to be the last resource for payment of these final expenses." She described case 20260011 (Hanson Mortuary) as an application for a 58-year-old male, a Bannock County resident and not a veteran, for which staff determined the applicant did not meet eligibility criteria and no responsible party for repayment was available. Case 20260012 (Wilkes Funeral Home), submitted by the father of a 46-year-old son listed as a Bennett County resident and not a veteran, appeared to meet eligibility criteria according to staff.
Commissioner (Speaker 3) moved to deny case 20260010 and approve cases 20260011 and 20260012. The motion passed by voice vote.
The board’s action reflects staff recommendations and the county’s interpretation of Idaho Code 31-3403; the approved applications were for $1,500 each. The record shows the county relied on staff eligibility determinations; the commission did not take evidence beyond the staff presentations at the meeting.
