England said kindergarten teachers completed a week‑long Orton‑Gillingham training over the summer with follow‑up sessions during the year. "It's research based. It aligns with the science of reading," she said, describing the training as a foundational program to support students as they advance through grades.
England highlighted two full‑time staff who support students in the building: student interventionist Natasha Young, who helps with behavior, check‑in/check‑out plans and restorative conversations, and instructional specialist Julie Turner, who assists teachers with classroom strategies and data analysis. "Both of these people are just so integral to our building," England said.
The presentation also noted family and community engagement events—grandparents' day and a bingo night planned for November—and recent community donations, including a buddy bench donated in honor of Noah Edwards and made from recycled bottle caps. England credited community partners such as Mueller Company for volunteering and supply drives.
Board members asked about expanding Orton‑Gillingham training beyond kindergarten. England said the district is concentrating on kindergarten this year but hopes to train more teachers in the future. No formal action was requested or taken on the presentation.
