Jennifer Ward said the city currently offers three reservable shelters at City Park for $20 per hour (May 1–Oct. 1) and proposed adding the John Barnard shelter and the downtown Dallas Amphitheater to the reservation platform. Ward described three smaller shelters (Rotary Park, Gala Park and Kingsborough Park) that city council asked the board to consider for inclusion as rentable spaces.
Several board members raised concerns that adding a small shelter such as Kingsborough to the reservation system could remove informal community sheltering used during youth soccer and other activities, and that staffing and cleanup costs might outweigh the expected revenue. One board member moved that the board recommend city council not add the additional small shelters to the reservation system; the motion was seconded and the board voted unanimously in favor.
Next steps: staff will forward the board’s recommendation to city council for consideration and will continue to operate existing reservable large venues (gazebo, kitchen shelter, and amphitheater) in the reservation system.
