Board backs ADA-accessible swings at City Park after donors commit funds

The Parks and Tree Advisory Board voted unanimously to recommend that city council approve installation of ADA-accessible swings at City Park. Staff said the project has been under consideration since citizen requests in September 2024 and is already in the city’s capital planning.
Jennifer Ward explained the project’s site selection and that staff sought locations that would integrate the new swings with existing play structures while avoiding tree removal. Support services supervisor Michael Pierce described accessibility features and surfacing choices: staff selected rubber tile surfacing over poured-in-place to ease maintenance and repairs and proposed adding ADA parking stalls on Allgood Street with a van-accessible space and curb ramp.
Sunnetta Forsbergen, who said she initiated the request in September 2024, thanked staff and confirmed two swings would be installed. Ward told the board Dallas Rotary has already provided $5,000 toward the project and the Dallas Community Foundation has pledged additional support once the project is approved. A member moved that staff implement the ADA-swings proposal and forward it to council; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will include the item in the capital schedule, pursue procurement of the swing and rubber tile surfacing, and report back with a more specific installation timeline dependent on equipment delivery and contractor availability.
