Commissioners hold electronic bail-bond items pending liability review

A commissioner who asked to pull items described staff memos attached to the packet that raised "a lot of concerns for county liability," and said the packet did not include responses addressing those concerns. "Conceptually, I like the concept. I just think we've got to do a lot better job on due diligence," the commissioner said. The commissioner reported speaking with the auditor, purchasing and IT, and said those offices had been told the project was dead.
Court administration staff and county departments were asked to return with additional analysis and to address the liability questions before commissioners reconsider the items. The commissioners agreed to hold the two items pulled from the consent agenda; no contract or policy was approved at the meeting.
Why it matters: Moving to electronic bail bonds could change how bail is posted and processed and may expose the county to new contract, cybersecurity or statutory-liability issues. Commissioners said due diligence and departmental coordination are required before approval.
