The Nye County Board of Commissioners voted to temporarily close Patrick Park between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for three months in response to repeated violent incidents and public safety concerns.
Commissioner Banks, sponsor of the item, cited recent stabbings and regular drug activity in the park and argued an immediate temporary closure is necessary while staff develops a permanent solution. "There is nothing quiet, tranquil, or dignified" at the park overnight, he said, noting several recent stabbing incidents.
Public commenters and park users acknowledged safety problems but raised enforceability questions; Amy Nelson asked how the closure would be enforced where the park is not fully fenced and who would ensure people comply. Sheriff Joe McGill said enforcement may be challenging because the town ordinance currently addresses sleeping in the park rather than hours of operation and that he would need to review town code to confirm enforceability; the board discussed trespass options and working with town staff.
The motion approved language closing the park nightly to the public except for persons with written or oral permission from an agent of the county or town, for three months from the date of adoption. Commissioners asked staff to present an ordinance or other permanent approach and to explore practical enforcement mechanisms and fencing options.
The motion carried with four votes in favor and one commissioner absent.
