City OKs Trees Atlanta contract to plant 40 trees on West Howard Avenue

Urban Naturalist Allison Erickson presented the planting plan and said species were chosen for canopy growth, soil‑volume constraints and long‑term survivability.
City arborist Logan House and staff explained species selection and placement, noting Georgia oak (Stone Mountain oak), bald cypress and sweetbay magnolia were selected to thrive in the corridor’s constrained soil and to maximize long‑term shade and canopy. Trees Atlanta will handle planting, watering and mulching and provide two years of maintenance and a two‑year warranty for the new trees. Staff said the work will begin in the current planting season, with perennial and groundcover plantings scheduled for spring 2026.
Commissioners asked neighbors and staff about long‑term maintenance and visibility at intersections; Trees Atlanta and city arborists said the work includes species and spacing choices to reduce future maintenance and avoid sight‑line obstruction. The resolution authorizing the agreement passed on an aye vote.
