Council approves 10-year franchise ordinance with Rocky Mountain Power; LED street-light questions remain

MENDON — Mendon City Council voted to approve an ordinance granting Rocky Mountain Power a franchise and general utility easement during its Jan. 8 meeting.
Steve Lichty, representing Rocky Mountain Power, told the council the company had prepared a draft ordinance and could provide an estimate for conversion of municipal street lights. Council members focused questions on LED color: the company said communities commonly choose a 3,000 Kelvin (K) LED, which provides a warmer white light; Mr. Lichty said he would provide a written estimate and contact staff.
Council moved to adopt the ordinance (a term of 10 years was discussed), the motion was seconded, and the council approved it by voice vote.
What’s next: Rocky Mountain Power will send the council a cost estimate for potential street-light replacements and the company will provide confirmation about available color-temperature options and shielding recommendations.
