Clarkston adopts CPI-driven garbage fee increase; 96-gallon can rises to $26.20

Clarkston’s Town Council on Nov. 18 approved a resolution to raise residential garbage collection fees in line with a Consumer Price Index adjustment. Speaker 4 read the resolution, citing a 5.1% CPI increase from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the town’s consortium service agreement with waste management.

The resolution sets the 96-gallon garbage collection fee at $26.20 and the 64-gallon fee at $25.10. "A resolution amending the Clarkston Town Master Fees scheduled to increase garbage collection fees," Speaker 4 read aloud before the council voted.

Council discussion was brief. Speaker 5 said the town must pass through increases tied to the contract to avoid losing money, and Speaker 6 moved to approve the resolution; Speaker 4 seconded. The motion carried and Speaker 4 announced, "Resolution 25 dash 0 9 stands approved." The resolution was recorded as effective 11/18/2025 and will be reflected in December billing.

The council cited Section 6(b) of the Cash Waste Consortium Service Agreement as the contractual authority to adjust rates annually according to the CPI. The resolution text references the consumer-price-index change as the basis for the increase.

No public comment opposed the fee change at the meeting. The council’s vote was recorded as a majority in favor with no recorded opposition.

What happens next: the town clerk will post the certified resolution after canvassing formalities and the increased fees will appear on December utility billing.
