Representatives from the University of Iowa student government briefed the Iowa City council during the Dec. 9 work session that the student senate is preparing a resolution supporting more inclusive living‑learning communities (LLCs) and will send it to university administration for consideration. A student government representative said state rules concerning diversity, equity and inclusion had forced the removal of some identity‑based LLCs and that bringing back LLC‑style programs could help reconnect students with cultural houses located on the far side of campus.
Powwow funding: A student speaker reported the student senate recently passed a funding bill to support the Native American Student Association's powwow. "We approved $10,000 in funding for the powwow," the student representative said, and expressed excitement about restoring support for the cultural event after prior restrictions limited such funding.
Next steps: The student government representative said the resolution will be forwarded to university administration; council members thanked the students and wished them a good winter break. No city action was required or recorded on the student government items during the work session.
