Butte County Board mourns Congressman Doug LaMalfa and notes staff will continue constituent services

The Butte County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 13 unanimously adopted a resolution mourning the Jan. 6, 2026 death of U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa and honoring his years of service representing Northern California.
Chair read the resolution highlighting LaMalfa’s record — including wildfire prevention, forest management and disaster recovery advocacy — and recognized work that brought federal assistance and earmarks to Butte County projects. The board then invited the congressman’s district representative, Terry Devos (transcript spelling), to speak.
Devos and other speakers recalled LaMalfa’s accessibility to constituents and his involvement in local events. Devos told the board that two caseworkers in the congressman’s district office—who previously worked under former Representative Wally Herger per the transcript—will remain available to assist constituents with federal benefits such as Social Security, VA and immigration matters. He said district staff cannot assist with legislative or policy work while serving on the house payroll in the interim.
Board members thanked LaMalfa for his work on local priorities and asked staff to track how his passing could affect federal advocacy and pending community project funding in Washington. Staff noted one pending community project request associated with LaMalfa remained in a homeland security bill but that future advocacy may require outreach to other members of Congress or to senators if the district’s House seat changes hands through a special election.
The resolution passed and was entered into the county record.
