Butte County supervisors pick Bill Connolly as chair amid brief debate over vice chair role

The Butte County Board of Supervisors elected Supervisor Bill Connolly as chair during its Jan. 13 meeting and completed its annual leadership appointments.
Supervisor Bill Connolly was nominated and confirmed by the board after a short call for nominations. The vote was taken by voice; the motion passed and Connolly assumed the chair seat. The board then considered the vice chair position. A board member nominated themself for vice chair and the nomination proceeded to a voice vote.
One supervisor explained publicly that they might vote no on the vice chair nomination because, in their view, the chair should represent the majority views of the board. That supervisor said the public should understand their reasoning in advance of the vote. The board discussed the point briefly, then voted; the nomination carried and the board members swapped seats.
The leadership transition was procedural and did not change the board’s agenda. Members acknowledged the incoming leadership and moved on to committee and operational business.
