Board backs trail-plan realignment to avoid McDonald Road floodplain

The Park Board voted unanimously to recommend that City Council approve a proposed amendment to the 2018 Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan that would remove 969 linear feet of 10-foot trail from the McDonald Road floodplain and replace it with 1,156 linear feet of 10-foot trail routed inside the Estates of Bristol Valley and Bristol Park subdivisions, including a semicircular bench pad for seating.
Staff explained the realignment responds to site topography and constructability challenges in the floodplain and would allow the trail to remain mostly shaded and better graded. "We can make the grade work where it doesn't...the sidewalk is ADA compliant," a developer representative said while describing the chosen crossing point through a natural break in the trees.
Board members asked whether the proposed change would maintain continuity and visibility for trail users; staff and developers said the larger 10-foot segment will remain continuous and that a 5-foot sidewalk inside the subdivision would tie into the 10-foot trail.
The board moved and seconded a recommendation to forward the amendment to council. Staff said the council packet will include the full area and engineering considerations, and the amendment will be accompanied by map exhibits when presented to council.
