Director reports hoarding case, increased euthanasia and enforcement activity at animal control

Wilson County's animal control director reported a busy March, outlining enforcement activity, a hoarding case with multiple animal surrenders, and an uptick in euthanasia, and responded to public criticism about enforcement practices.

The director told the meeting that staff have been handling a larger number of animals and noted "We had a hoarding case in March" that resulted in several animals being surrendered. The director said some dogs were too severely injured to treat and were euthanized. "We do write tickets for people that dogs are running in large. We do prosecute folks," the director said, and added that the sheriff's office handles some public releases when they are involved.

The director also described how the department uses social media and that staff sometimes see criticism online alleging they do not pursue enforcement; the director said those posts are not published by the department and that enforcement is pursued when appropriate. The director said the department works with owners to help where possible and coordinates with other agencies when needed.

Board members accepted the director's report by motion and voice vote. No additional public commenters provided substantive testimony during the public comment period.

Next steps noted in the meeting included continuing the facility design process and routing budget requests for review; no further enforcement actions were decided at the meeting.
