Harper Woods council approves lead-service payment, asbestos abatement and routine appointments

City Manager Shemanski transmitted progress payment No. 7 for the 2024 DWSRF Lead Water Service Replacement Project (Project No. 180-331) and recommended approval of payment to Super Construction LLC for $60,620. When asked about project status, staff estimated the project is "probably around 80%" complete. The council approved the payment by roll-call vote.
On a separate project-related item, the council approved engaging BDS Environmental to remove asbestos-containing flooring material in the portion of City Hall to be renovated. Shemanski said the work will require City Hall to be closed for two days and staff will notify residents through the city's website, signage and the Nixle/water-app notification channels. The asbestos abatement contract was approved by resolution for $10,160.
In the consent agenda, council approved items 1 through 8, including appointing Timothy Davis to finish an unexpired term on the planning commission. The council conducted roll-call votes for those resolutions and recorded unanimous or majority approval for the presented items.
What happens next: Staff will schedule the asbestos abatement in January, notify residents of the temporary closure and continue work on the DWSRF lead-service replacement project until completion. The planning commission seat will be filled by Timothy Davis pending the administration of his oath or other onboarding procedures.
