The Deep Creek Watershed Board of Zoning Appeals approved Special Exception 510 for Amerco Real Estate (in care of U‑Haul Moving & Storage) to allow truck and trailer rentals at the property at the intersection of Garrett Highway and Glendale Road in the Town Center zoning district.
Lucas Gardner, a civil engineer with Civil & Environmental Consultants representing Amerco, told the board he prepared the site plan and described the project as a multi‑story self‑storage and U‑Haul truck rental facility. Gardner said storage is a permitted use in the zone and that the truck‑rental component required the special exception. At the hearing he stated “the proposed number of parking spaces for the trucks is 8 or 9 spaces.”
Board members reviewed application elements including lighting, hours of operation and an assurance there would be no exterior paging/sound system. The board discussed standard mitigation (downward lighting, hours) and indicated they had no additional conditions beyond those standard controls reflected elsewhere in county permitting. The transcript records a motion to approve and the chair stated Special Exception 510 “is approved as well.”
The applicant was reminded that subsequent permitting (building permits, site plan approvals and any signage or operational permits) and compliance with county codes remain required before the business can operate.
