Horry County recognizes oyster‑restoration program and student essay winners

Horry County council adopted two recognition resolutions: one honoring the county’s Oyster Stewardship Program and one recognizing winners of the Soil and Water Conservation District essay contest.
Brent Carey, Horry County stormwater watershed planner, described the oyster stewardship initiative and its goals. "This program shows how local action and teamwork can protect the waters that define our coast," Carey said, noting that more than 400 manufactured wire reefs have been installed and that the reefs filter an estimated 133,000,000 gallons of water per day and help stabilize shorelines. The resolution encourages residents and organizations to participate in shell recycling and restoration activities.
Separately, Mister Wagner read a resolution recognizing the 2025 district essay contest winners and named fifth grade district winner Kaysley Jane Blanton (Green Sea Floyd Elementary) and seventh grade district winner Kylie Sessions (Myrtle Beach Middle School). The council adopted both resolutions by voice vote and thanked participating staff and students.
Next steps: the county will continue oyster restoration installations at planned sites and will promote shell recycling and community engagement as described in the adopted resolution.
