General Services highlights fleet, facilities and projects; three employees recognized

General Services Director Lee Withers described operations that maintain nearly 1.3 million square feet of city facilities and a fleet of about 2,000 units, detailed projects planned for 2026 (city hall renovations, generators, Fire Station 11 kitchen, Fox Theater repairs), and recognized employees of the year David Valdivia and Gus Palau plus Eric Hoch as the mayor's unsung hero.
Lee Withers, general services director, told the council that the department provides administration, real-property services, fleet management, capital projects and building services that keep city operations running. He noted the fleet manages nearly 2,000 units and that building services maintains more than 1.3 million square feet of city facilities.
Withers highlighted current and upcoming capital projects including museum renovation and expansion; the Cesar Chavez community center renovation and the new East Side Library; tenant improvements at the Hulan Place campus and several 2026 projects such as City Hall lobby and restroom renovations, emergency generator replacements at fire stations, replacement of a fuel storage tank, and roof repairs at the Fox Theater.
Withers also recognized employees of the year: David Valdivia (building services maintenance electrician) and Gus Palau (fire mechanic), and reaffirmed Fleet's awards (2023 green fleet and 2025 NAPA recognition). Council members thanked general services staff and praised their role in events such as the Festival of Lights.
