Orem Library staff report budget boost proposal, construction progress and pilot partnerships

Library staff told the Orem Library Advisory Commission that internal budget planning shows generally positive prospects and no major cuts are expected; staff said they are pursuing an additional $50,000 to collection development budgets to reach recommended targets.
"Right now it looks like generally great news for the library," staff said, adding that the $50,000 proposal would continue ongoing increases to collection development that the library has pursued for three years. Staff said they will provide a deeper dive on numbers at next month’s meeting.
Staff also updated the commission on construction and partnerships. They said the library renovation is largely complete with landscaping and plaza work remaining; the on-site fence will move this Friday and staff estimated about six weeks until finishing touches are done. The physics department at Utah Valley University will assist with acoustics testing for the children’s story time wing.
On partnerships, staff described a pilot to place Little Free Libraries in three city parks using materials from the library’s book sale, managed by youth groups and volunteers for replenishment. Staff also noted a recent Utah Library Association change to an institutional membership model that will allow all library staff to be enrolled under a single city-paid membership.
Staff announced upcoming events: a book sale next Monday–Tuesday and an author visit scheduled Feb. 5. Demand for some events has exceeded capacity and volunteers may be asked to assist as ushers.
Staff said they will share updated display and circulation metrics for recent years, and will return for a budget-focused discussion at the next meeting.
