Council amends code to allow certain enclosed trailers and cargo containers

The Green River City Council voted July 8 to amend municipal code (Title 10, Chapter 18) to expand the definition of accessory storage containers to include enclosed trailers, truck van boxes, railroad cars and semi-trailers when they are removed from their transportation apparatus, painted a solid color and comply with setback and visibility requirements.
Planning staff explained the change followed a planning commission review and recommendation. "The planning commission has been working for about 3 months on amending that chapter," a staff member said, describing that the revision would allow certain cargo-container types for on-site storage so long as they are not used for transportation and meet appearance and setback standards.
Council discussion focused on safety and durability (axles removed, risk from damaged containers), residential and commercial zone rules (residential minimum lot size of 7,500 sq. ft. required to have a container; agricultural properties allowed up to one container per acre, maximum five), and the need for visual screening on Main Street commercial properties. A member asked whether the amendment would allow stacked containers used for housing; staff said building-department requirements and other codes would still apply.
A motion to approve Ordinance 2025-01 was made, seconded and passed by roll call of those present.
