Planning Commission forwards code changes to remove newspaper notice requirement after Wasatch Wave closure

Midway City staff asked the planning commission to recommend code text amendments removing local newspaper publication requirements from several noticing provisions in Chapter 16 of the land‑use code, citing the closure of the Wasatch Wave earlier in the year.

Staff explained the proposed edits to sections 16.22.040 (general requirements), 16.26.010 (public notice) and 16.26.040 (notice regarding changes to zoning ordinance requirements) would keep mailed notice to property owners within 600 feet, require posting in at least three public places and add website posting, while deleting the sentence that required publication in a local newspaper of general circulation. Staff said the change also harmonizes duplicate and sometimes inconsistent language across the code.

Commissioners asked practical questions about which public places would be used for posting and whether social media should be added; staff said the city website and the state site provide consistent notice, and social media may be used optionally but the city preferred not to mandate a specific social platform. One commissioner noted the Rosette Record publishes twice weekly and could meet publication needs depending on frequency requirements.

The commission voted to recommend approval of the code text amendments, with staff findings included, and will forward the recommendation to the City Council for final action.
