Supervisors approve access-control–ready door option for county building

Supervisors reviewed two contractor proposals: option 1, which would cost $33,750 and would not accommodate future access-control hardware, and option 2, which would cost $36,100 and is designed to permit access-control installation later. Staff said option 2 uses a center mullion locking system that would allow future card readers; option 1 uses pins that lock into the door header and threshold and would not support that retrofit.
Dave, the staff member who presented the estimate, told the board the contractor priced both configurations and that the work will be staged to avoid discovering major unforeseen problems. He warned that the building has some voids under the lobby floor and that full certainty about hidden conditions is impossible without demolition, but said the contractor has budgeted for likely staging and that most of the install will be straightforward.
On timing, Dave said the contractor is "about 2 months out" to start and estimated the on-site install would take about one to one-and-a-half days; the board discussed notifying the public and court users because the handicap egress would be unavailable during that period. Staff also confirmed the card-reader hardware would be purchased and installed by a different contractor later if the board chooses to add access control, and that keys and core replacement would be handled during this project so both doors will be keyed alike.
A supervisor moved to select option 2 (access-control‑capable) and the motion carried by voice vote. After the vote, staff were asked to send a formal contract request to the bidder and to keep the board informed about scheduling and public notifications.
The board recorded the motion and voice approval; no roll-call tally with named votes appears in the transcript. The project will be managed through the county maintenance budget and any additional unexpected structural work would be brought back to the board.
