Raquel Cinco, director of the county CVB, told commissioners the bureau has been active at trade shows and is pursuing new event and lodging opportunities while tracking recent hotel closures and renovations in Geary County.
At the Denver show in early January the CVB distributed visitor guides and promoted fishing tournaments and area venues, Cinco said. She reported the CVB has received four RFPs for the convention center tied to Kansas State University opponents and helped submit proposals to capture that business.
On lodging, Cinco said several properties have closed or remain under review. She said the Econo Lodge in Grandview Plaza appears to be permanently closed after fire-department inspections citing safety issues; another property formerly the Great Western now operating as "The Dells" had rooms with no furnishings and was awaiting state fire-marshal review. "The Motel 6 should reopen by March 1," she said, and a property that moved from Super 8 to Red Lion and then to executive suites has returned to Red Lion branding.
Cinco also described county beautification grants intended to help hotel properties and encouraged commissioners to consider support that could spur occupancy. Commissioners thanked her for the update; no formal action was taken.
