Brian Accuerto, introduced to council as a Greater Harrison Rotary member, presented a proposal for a community "Day of Service" to be held on Sept. 15, 2018, the Saturday after the Sept. 11 anniversary. Accuerto said the event will bring together churches, schools, businesses, service groups and students across the Greater Harrison area to perform community projects in the spirit of service.
Accuerto asked council for partnership and help spreading the word and invited members of the public and community organizations to a planning meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Coffee Peddler. "We're calling it the the day of service, and it's gonna be on 09/15/2018," Accuerto said. He outlined possible projects including property clean-ups for seniors, park repairs, and small construction projects.
Council members thanked Accuerto and other Rotarians; several members said the program is a positive way to engage youth and community organizations and pledged to attend the planning meeting. Rotarians confirmed the school district and local ministerial alliance were on board and that additional planning meetings will be held.
The council did not take any formal action beyond the recognition and the invitations to the planning meeting.
