Public works staff briefed the Village of Deerfield Board of Trustees on April 21 about a water-main break that occurred under a creek near Illinois Trail and Cherry Court.
Bob Phillips (public works) said crews capped and isolated the affected section so no residents are out of water and fire hydrants remain functional. He told trustees the crossing will require directional drilling to replace the main—an open-cut excavation through the creek is not feasible—and the village has a directional-drill-only estimate of about $30,000 (materials and labor not included). Phillips said staff are obtaining additional bids and expect to return to the board with more complete pricing and a recommended plan within roughly two to four weeks.
Phillips said the affected pipe dates to the 1960s and that construction activity on nearby Hazel Avenue, plus pressure changes in the system (a "water hammer" effect), could have contributed to the failure. He said prior crossings beneath creeks have failed before and that the village—s repair work will seek to restore normal circulation and avoid dead ends in the system.
Trustees praised staff for the response and asked staff to investigate whether adjacent sections of main need replacement; staff said they would follow up and include required pricing and scope when they return to the board.
