Deerfield High School Warbots honored after winning state robotics championship

Mayor Daniel C. Shapiro and the Village Board of Trustees on April 21 recognized the Deerfield High School Warbots for winning the First Tech Challenge Illinois state championship and advancing to the world competition in Houston.
Sponsor Howard Citron told trustees he has worked with the group for nearly four years and praised the students’ continuity and teamwork. “I—m almost at 4 years here,” Citron said, noting the team—s long development and recent success. Mikey Eberts, who identified himself as president of Deerfield Robotics, described the season and the robotics program—s community outreach and preparation, saying the team had been competing in the challenge for about 15 years and that this year the Warbots were state champions.
Team captain Caleb Spector explained technical details of the robot and the match format, saying “a match is 2 and a half minutes” with a 30-second autonomous period followed by driver control. Spector described the robot—s arm, claw and drivetrain, and noted the team uses custom water-jet cut parts and extensive 3D printing. Students on the team individually introduced themselves and noted college plans, giving trustees a chance to recognize the roster.
The board gave the team a round of applause and the mayor urged residents to follow the team as it moves on to further competitions. The recognition concluded and the board continued with its regular agenda.
