Carmel transfers explosive containment box to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office

The Board of Public Works and Safety on Feb. 4 approved a resolution (BPW02-04-26-01) donating an explosive containment box previously used by the city’s explosives K‑9 to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
Benjamin Ling, city attorney, described the item as surplus to the city's needs because Carmel no longer staffs an explosives canine. “We have an explosive box that we would have used when we had an explosives canine. We no longer have an explosives canine and the Hamilton County Sheriff is going to be getting an explosives K‑9 and needs a box to hold explosives,” Ling said. Lieutenant Katie Malloy, K‑9 unit supervisor for the Carmel Police Department, confirmed the department will rely on the sheriff’s department or federal partners (which maintain bomb dogs and EOD technicians) for responses going forward.
The resolution passed by voice vote. The item transfers equipment to the county to support county-level explosive response capability and clarifies that Carmel Police will contact the sheriff or federal partners when explosive-threat responses are needed.
