The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 3 authorized the county manager to submit two Small Business Infrastructure Grant Program applications to the North Carolina Department of Commerce for sidewalk repairs and extensions in and around Beacon Village.
Ebi Otterstall told the board the county previously sought multiple applications and about $5 million in total funding but awarded projects must focus on repairing infrastructure damaged by recent storms. NC Commerce selected an initial Beacon Village project; county staff are pursuing a second application to extend repairs along Railroad Street and other connectors to complete the pedestrian grid.
Commissioners asked for clarification about project boundaries and partner roles; staff said NCDOT will be a partner on construction and that the second application would add coverage for Railroad Street and support broader pedestrian connectivity. A commissioner moved and the board approved both resolutions by voice vote.
Otterstall said the county will continue to work with NC Commerce on the first agreement and pursue the second application to secure additional funds to complete the area’s repairs and extensions.
