Historic Rangeley proposes 'Rangeley History Makers' banners; Select Board OKs installation

Michelle Landry, director of Historic Rangeley (the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society), asked the board to allow her group to produce a ‘Rangeley History Makers’ exhibit and matching street banners to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. “We operate the Upper Heritage Museum and the Rangeley History Museum in Downtown Rangeley,” Landry said, and proposed researching local “history makers,” conducting a community survey, and printing banners for downtown utility poles.
Landry said most photos would come from the society’s own collection and that the banners would cost about $110 apiece. She said Historic Rangeley would pursue corporate sponsors and grants to finance sign production but asked whether the town could help with installation and whether the banners could include both the town and society logos.
Board members asked practical questions about banner dimensions, the number of poles (about 27–30 were noted), lighting requirements for American flags, and whether existing stored banners could be used to fill gaps. One member suggested using downtown reserve funds and a friendly amendment proposed considering a $2,000–$3,000 contribution to let the society focus on design and fundraising rather than immediate cash collection.
After discussion, a motion to authorize Historic Rangeley to use the town’s sign holders and for staff to assist with installation carried by recorded voice vote (all in favor). The board did not commit town funds in the same motion; members asked staff to follow up next week with available reserve balances and potential funding options.
The matter will return to the board for any decision on municipal funding and final banner specifications.
