Sandpoint— Councilor Pam Duquette requested Feb. 4 that the council prioritize a renewed review of accessory dwelling unit (ADU) standards, citing gaps in the city code on height, setbacks and design details for ADUs.
Council and staff discussed the planning commissionwork from prior months; staff estimated the residential code work earlier this cycle amounted to roughly 200–300 staff hours and multiple public hearings. Council members asked staff to provide links to the Planning & Zoning meetings where ADU revisions were discussed and to prepare a concise report summarizing the prior work and outstanding decisions so councilors can review before directing new code drafting.
The council then voted to request that staff compile the historical materials and a short staff report; no new code text was directed at this meeting.
What happens next: Planning staff will assemble the planning commission meeting recordings and a brief memo outlining prior ADU proposals (including prior changes such as the 2022 increase in allowable ADU size). Council asked staff to return with materials for review, after which members may decide whether to place ADU code drafting higher on the staff priority list.
