Committee votes down proposal to add second monthly bingo session

The Miami Lakes Senior Committee debated whether to reinstate a second monthly bingo session and ultimately voted the proposal down after concerns about volunteer capacity, budget and program trade-offs.

Speaker 2 moved that the committee return to two bingos per month, arguing the activity draws the largest attendance and provides an accessible option for many seniors. Supporters said two bingos would better serve seniors who cannot attend alternative outings.

Opponents raised concerns about the volunteer workload and the committee's budget, noting that restoring a second bingo could require cutting other activities such as field trips or theater outings. "If you have 2 bingos, are you gonna take away ... the playhouse and the food? Because we don't have time or money for everything," a committee member asked during the debate.

The motion was put to a hand vote. Speaker 4 announced the result: "So we have 7 no's. We have 2 yeses and 1 abstain, which is me. So motion fails." The meeting transcript recorded the vote as two in favor, seven opposed and one abstention, and the motion did not pass.

The committee chair reminded members of Robert's Rules for motions and noted the topic may be revisited at a later date for six months if desired. No further action to change the bingo schedule was taken at the meeting.
