Former Waupaca librarian urges council to attend poverty-simulation event March 1

Sue Abrahamson, a retired Waupaca Public Library employee and community volunteer, addressed the Common Council on Feb. 3 to invite council members, department heads and community leaders to a free poverty-simulation event.
"We have room for 80 participants and we need 15 volunteers," Abrahamson said. "And as, about 05:00, we have 13. So I only need 2 more volunteers." The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Abrahamson said she had participated in a similar exercise in Minneapolis and it changed how she served patrons.
Abrahamson urged elected officials, school-board members, county supervisors, faith communities and business leaders to attend so they could better understand barriers to housing, employment and health care and how local policies affect access to basic needs. She provided a poster to the clerk to share with council members and staff.
No formal council action was taken on the invitation during the meeting.
