Staff report: NVTA BRT planning, Pickett Road Trail update and upcoming Council hearings
Summary
Staff briefed the commission on recent Council items including Northern Virginia Transportation Authority recommendations for Bus Rapid Transit corridors, a pause on the Pickett Road Trail pending further discussion, and three Council public hearings of interest including the zoning amendments recommended tonight.
During the staff report the Planning Department reviewed recent City Council activity and items relevant to the commission.
Staff highlighted the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) Bus Rapid Transit action plan adopted by NVTA, noting the plan recommends considering BRT‑type service upgrades along two corridors that pass through Fairfax City (Fairfax Boulevard and Cambridge Road). Staff said the recommendations do not prescribe lane separation but do suggest enhanced service and amenities and that jurisdictions should consider the corridors in future comprehensive plan updates.
Other updates: staff recapped a joint Work Session on Move Fairfax City, noted that City Council recently received an update on the Pickett Road Trail (the Council asked to hold the trail until further discussion), and flagged three items on the July 22 Council agenda of direct interest to Planning Commission (the Davies proposal, Courthouse Plaza redevelopment and the zoning text amendments recommended by the commission this evening). Staff said it would circulate links and materials for commissioners’ review.
