North Providence schools recognized with state Green Ribbon honors; girls soccer wins state sportsmanship award

The North Providence School Committee recognized two elementary schools for sustainability education and presented a sportsmanship citation to the high school girls soccer program at its meeting.
School representatives said Stephen Olney Elementary School and Maguire Elementary School were named among seven statewide recipients of the 2025 Rhode Island Green Ribbon School Award for efforts such as operating newer school buildings with energy‑friendly elements and installing water refill stations to reduce plastic bottle use. The committee read formal citations and asked principals Anthony Pesido (Stephen Olney) and Alicia Lisi (Maguire) to accept.
The committee also announced that North Providence High School's girls varsity soccer team received the 2025 Gianna Cirillo Memorial Scholarship Award for sportsmanship. Athletic Director Anthony Piccicelli introduced coaches and the roster of student-athletes; the committee presented citations to head coach Kamal Hoof and assistant coach Dennis Piccicelli and invited the team up for photographs and applause.
Committee members praised staff, custodians, food service workers, teachers and students for the recognitions and encouraged the community to celebrate the programs. The committee told the honorees they were welcome to leave after the recognition if they wished.
