A staff member of the Stevens County Recorder's Office (Speaker 1) said the office issues birth, marriage and death certificates and is the custodian of all real estate records for Stevens County. "The Stevens County Recorder's Office provides birth certificates," the staff member said, adding that the office "provides marriage licenses" and "also provide[s] death certificates."
The office’s role touches major life events, Speaker 1 said, including home purchases, births and weddings, and the staff described those duties as essential public services. "We are involved when you're purchasing a home, when you have a baby, when you're getting married," Speaker 1 said.
Speaker 1 noted the office is small but flexible: "We have 3 individuals. We are all cross trained," and staff can "pivot from working with the real estate records to helping someone with a marriage license" during the day. The office also performs abstracting services and title research for outside companies that request searches of Stevens County records; "They contact our office and then we research our records and return the results to them," Speaker 1 said.
A second staff member (Speaker 2) described moving from education into recorder work and bringing prior county experience from Minnesota to the role. Speaker 2 said a rewarding part of the job is ongoing professional learning because statutes and procedures affecting real estate and vital records change over time.
On recruitment and candidate qualities, Speaker 1 said an applicant "needs to have integrity," and stressed confidentiality, accuracy and punctuality as essential traits for the position. No formal actions, motions or votes were recorded in this briefing.
