Summary
The City of Las Vegas Planning Commission voted to advance a general-plan and text amendment creating a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) overlay, removing an animal-hospital prohibition before forwarding the measure to City Council in ordinance form.
The City of Las Vegas Planning Commission on Tuesday approved a general-plan amendment and a corresponding text amendment to create a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) overlay and will forward the ordinance to City Council.
City staff opened the public hearing on the proposal and answered commissioners’ questions about permitted and prohibited uses. Commissioner Taylor asked that ‘‘animal hospital, clinic, or shelter’’ be removed from the list of prohibited uses; Fred Solis of the Department of Community Development said staff would strike that use before the item goes to council. Commissioner Rogan moved to approve the project as amended; the motion carried and the item will be prepared in ordinance form for City Council.
Supporters of the overlay told the commission it would allow compatible higher-density development near transit corridors; commissioners and staff discussed buffer standards and allowed uses during deliberations. Marco Velotta, representing the Department of Community Development, said workshop feedback had been incorporated and that staff was available to answer questions before council review.
The commission’s action advances the TOD overlay in the City of Las Vegas 2050 master plan and updates parts of LVMC Title 19 to reflect the new overlay. The item will appear on the city council agenda in ordinance form for further public review.
