The Jefferson Parish Ethics and Compliance Commission appointed attorney Kyle Shonikas to serve as the commission’s representative on the three-member quality assurance review committee at its Jan. 21 meeting. The appointment fills a vacancy created by the recent resignation of a long-serving member, Jim Lehi, and follows notice that the council’s prior appointee, John Benz, also tendered his resignation for health reasons.
A commissioner described Shonikas as an experienced New Orleans lawyer with a long career in private practice and arbitration experience. Commissioners noted that the committee’s work is time-sensitive: it must review IG reports, conduct interviews and publish a quality assurance review no later than May each year. The commission moved and seconded the appointment and recorded affirmative votes; a commissioner said Mr. Shonikas would be invited to the next commission meeting to introduce himself and discuss expectations.
The one-year appointment is subject to annual review by the commission.
