DHS seeks authority to join cell and gene therapy Medicaid model for sickle cell treatment

Elizabeth Pittman, director for the Division of Medical Services at the Department of Human Services, described a proposed rule to allow DHS to participate in what she described as the "cell and gene therapy model," a Center for Medicaid medical services model that would permit value‑based payment agreements for cell and gene therapy treatments for patients with sickle cell disorder.
"The next rule is, for to allow the Department of Human Services to participate in the cell and gene therapy model, which is a center for Medicaid medical services model that allows us to enter into value based payment agreements to treat patient with patients with sickle cell disorder with CGT therapy," Pittman said, and invited committee members to ask questions.
Committee members did not press further on the proposal and the chair stated the rule "stands reviewed" without objection. DHS staff indicated they were available to answer follow‑up questions if members wished to pursue technical details after the meeting.
