Pitkin County approves $1 million for Good Deeds program to secure workforce homes

Pitkin County commissioners on Feb. 11 approved a $1,000,000 grant agreement with the West Mountain Regional Housing Coalition to fund the Good Deeds program for 2026.
April Long, executive director of the housing coalition, said the program — launched in 2024 with local government contributions — buys market homes and secures deed restrictions that keep the homes affordable for qualified local buyers. To date the coalition said it has used about $4.5 million from local partners to secure deed‑restricted homes or deed restrictions on 20 properties housing more than 30 employees across the valley.
Ashley Pron, the county’s housing and resiliency director, said the $1 million from Pitkin County, along with commitments from Snowmass, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and Colorado Mountain College, aims to scale the program toward a $2.5 million funding pool to secure roughly 11 additional homes and reach a goal of 30 homes in 2026.
Commissioners asked about employer participation; staff said the school district and hospital housing directors have been engaged and that employer cost‑sharing arrangements are under discussion to help employees qualify.
Next steps: the county will execute the grant agreement and coalition staff said they will return with mid‑year updates.
