Bronson Elementary showcases weeklong literacy program, book bus and veteran visitors

Bronson Elementary staff presented a summary of a weeklong literacy program that included in-class projects, visiting readers from a nearby AVID program, a book bus from the La County Schools Foundation and a veterans visit organized with a local American Legion post.

Speaker 4, who led the presentation, said the school "got a new reading coach this year" and used that staffing change to expand activities and give teachers latitude to try creative literacy lessons. Staff described daily themes: an independence/history focus, cross-grade reading with AVID students, the book bus visit that let pre-K through fifth graders choose books, a veterans-day classroom engagement, and a culminating "museum" where each class presented on a chosen historical figure.

Teachers highlighted grade-level work: kindergarten stations and timelines, first-grade reader's theater, second-grade museum exhibits and student-written pamphlets, a third-grade unit on Rosa Parks that included a student who recently arrived from Venezuela connecting her experience to Parks' story, fourth-grade pioneer activities and a fifth-grade classroom debate where students argued which leader had more impact on advancing Black people after reading W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington.

Presenters and attendees described the week as "busy but fun-filled and meaningful," and staff encouraged continued family engagement at upcoming events such as the Bronson FFA alumni fundraiser. The presentation did not seek or result in any formal vote; it was an informational highlight on the agenda.
