The Marshall City Council approved a resolution authorizing a property tax abatement to finance park improvements, including restroom and viewing upgrades at Legion Field and playground and irrigation work at Channel Parkway.
Municipal adviser Mikaela told the council the maximum tax abatement shown in the packet is $840,000 but that the actual bonded amount is expected to be lower after accounting for donations. At the meeting parks staff highlighted a recent $75,000 donation from the Marshall Baseball Association toward Legion Field improvements.
Russ Santo, representing the Marshall Baseball Association, thanked parks staff and said the association looks forward to upgraded bathrooms and improved spectator amenities that will help attract more tournaments. Council members expressed appreciation for the partnership and for the years of incremental improvements at Legion Field.
Council moved and passed the resolution approving the property tax abatement on a roll call vote. Staff noted that the abatement is a financing mechanism and that final bond sizing will reflect committed donations.
Next steps: staff will proceed with necessary financing steps and return to council with final issuance documents when appropriate.
