The City of Fairfax School Board elected Carolyn Pitches as chair and Christina Sasseri as vice chair at its annual organizational meeting and approved a package of organizational arrangements for the 2025–26 school year.
The board cited Section 22.1-72 of the Code of Virginia as the statutory basis for conducting the annual organizational proceedings. With no competing nominees, Lauren Bartomey nominated Carolyn Pitches for chair and the board approved the nomination; Pitches did not participate in that vote and then presided over the remainder of the meeting. Christina Sasseri was nominated and elected vice chair by unanimous vote.
As part of a consolidated organizational motion, the board set its regular monthly meeting dates (the first Monday of each month for October–June 2026, with the September meeting on the second Monday and specific exceptions for January and February work sessions), scheduled a special meeting for August 4, 2025, and noted planned joint sessions with the City Council and with Fairfax County Public Schools in December and other months. The board also approved a rotation for the superintendent and board members to attend Fairfax County School Board meetings.
The motion set board member pay at $4,600 per year and the chair’s pay at $5,600 per year. The board appointed Barbara King as clerk and retained Stacy Haney for general legal services. It named Carolyn Pitches as liaison to the Fairfax County School Board, appointed Amit Hickman (with alternate Carolyn Pitches) to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, named Sarah Kelsey to the City of Fairfax Environmental Sustainability Committee and set delegates for the VSBA convention and other advisory committees.
The motion was seconded and approved unanimously. No public comments or hearings were held during the meeting.
What happens next: the organizational appointments and schedule take effect immediately for planning and calendar purposes; the board will follow the approved meeting and work-session rotation during the 2025–26 year.
